The Martina Carrillo Cemetery Garden of Memory was studied in 2015 under the project titled “AFROANDINE IDENTITIES AND RACIAL DOMINATION IN THE NORTHERN ANDES: Archaeology of Domestic Areas in the Chota-Mira Valley (17th-19th Centuries)” directed by Dr. Balanzátegui, with a timeframe identified between the 18th century and 1932.
The collaborative approach of the archaeological project at this site was carried out from the beginning, with a connection to local members who participated in activities for its revitalization. The methodology and analysis included the application of various techniques such as the use of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to identify the unidentified graves in the cemetery.
The work in the cemetery is also published in the article titled “Collaborative Archaeology to Revitalize an Afro-Ecuadorian Cemetery from the 18th Century” (Balanzátegui, 2018), which discusses the joint work with the grassroots feminist organization CONAMUNE-Carchi for the safeguarding and protection of the cemetery.
