This context is identified as a midden located at the Teresa Montero House. It stands out for the type of cultural material associated with the enslaved Afro-descendant population. Initially, 6 shovel tests were conducted, of which 5 were positive, indicating a high concentration of material. This area was expanded from test pits PB2 and PB3, which were excavated in arbitrary levels. The test pits were excavated in 8 stratigraphic levels until reaching sterile soil. Notably, faunal remains were present, and their analysis revealed both macro and microvertebrate types. The abundant ceramics were of a colonial and rustic type.
The nature and composition of this midden, where 20,000 animal bones and around 15,000 ceramic fragments, both diagnostic and non-diagnostic, were found, are diverse—not only because the deposits were predominantly horizontal but also due to the variety of materials. Some of the special finds analyzed during the laboratory phase by project specialists include objects directly related to the enslaved Afro-descendant population and inhabitants of the area in the 18th century, with a variety of ceramics displaying specific shapes and inscriptions. Similarly, glass bottles identified with their historical origin, along with metal and ceramic elements, have complemented the information.
The following is an excerpt from the report presented by Balanzátegui (2022) for the project titled “AFRO-ANDEAN IDENTITIES AND RACIAL DOMINATION IN THE NORTHERN ANDES: Archaeology of Domestic Areas in the Chota-Mira Valley (17th–19th Centuries)”:
“African diaspora ceramics are identified through distinctive shapes and decorations associated with enslaved Africans and the ceramic traditions and identities brought from West Africa. The ceramics in this collection represent the trade identities among enslaved Africans and are essential for creating new identities based on their pre-existing symbolic traditions (de Souza & Agostini, 2012). The unglazed, hand-made earthenware from the Teresa Montero site includes tubes with incised decoration, a cylindrical object with a narrow body and incised decoration featuring a Bakongo cosmogram, a portion of a zoomorphic figure, and small oval vessels. Additionally, a group of unglazed, wheel-thrown pottery fragments originate from large jars or vessels with incised line and asterisk motifs.”
